Definition

Wi-Fi is a wireless communication technology based on the IEEE 802.11 standards family, used to connect devices to the internet and local networks without the need for cables.
It is widely used in homes, businesses, schools, airports, and embedded devices (IoT).
How does Wi-Fi work?
Wi-Fi operates in 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and more recently 6 GHz (Wi-Fi 6E) frequency bands, using digital modulations like OFDM and multiple access techniques like MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output).
The network consists of:
- Access Point: emits Wi-Fi signal (e.g., router)
- Client device: laptop, smartphone, sensor, etc.
- Backhaul: internet connection (fiber like GPON for example, DOCSIS, etc.)
Main Wi-Fi Standards
Version | Technical Name | Frequency | Bandwidth | Theoretical Speed |
---|---|---|---|---|
Wi-Fi 4 | 802.11n | 2.4 / 5 GHz | 20–40 MHz | Up to 600 Mbps |
Wi-Fi 5 | 802.11ac | 5 GHz | 80–160 MHz | Up to 3.5 Gbps |
Wi-Fi 6 | 802.11ax | 2.4 / 5 GHz | 20–160 MHz | Up to 9.6 Gbps |
Wi-Fi 6E | 802.11ax | 6 GHz (new) | 160 MHz | Up to 9.6 Gbps |
Wi-Fi 7 | 802.11be | 2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz | 320 MHz | > 30 Gbps (theoretical) |
Applications in Testing and Measurement
In the production testing of Wi-Fi devices (modems, routers, embedded modules), the following are verified:
- Calibration
- IEEE 802.11 standards compliance
- Error rate (PER, BER)
- Wi-Fi connectivity and authentication
- SNR, real throughput, and latency
Tools and instruments used:
- LitePoint IQxel
- Rohde & Schwarz CMW270, Keysight N4010A
- Automation software: LabVIEW, TestStand, Python
- Traffic simulators and Wi-Fi spectrum analyzers
